CYPE expands its range of international concrete codes with the incorporation of BS 8110-1:1997

These regulations which are governed by the British Standards (BS) are used today in English speaking countries such as India, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong in Asia, and Nigeria and Zimbabwe in Africa

CYPE has increased its range of international codes for structural analysis with concrete by implementing the BS 8110-1:1997 Structural use of concrete. Part 1: Code of practice for design and construction in the programs CYPECAD, CYPE 3D, Curtain walls, Reinforced concrete cantilever walls and Foundation elements.

This code, developed by the BSI group which produces British standards, is currently used by a great number of non-European English speaking countries, since in countries that are members of the European Union (EU), including the United Kingdom itself, for the moment, it has been substituted by Eurocode 2: Design of concrete structures - Part 1-1: General rules and rules for buildings (EN 1992-1-1:2004+A1:2014), which CYPE has also implemented in its software.

With this new incorporation, CYPE has taken another step forward in its commitment to internationalisation based on the implementation of standards specific to the countries in which it is present, hoping that with this new standard it will satisfy professionals with projects in these states. In particular, the BS 8110-1:1997 is used in parts of Asia such as India, Malaysia, Singapore and the autonomous territory of Hong Kong, where the Spanish software company is immersed in an ambitious implantation strategy, as well as in numerous African countries like Uganda, Zimbabwe, former Rhodesia, and Nigeria, where in this last country the company has an agreement with the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), thanks to which the official software for quantities, bills of quantities, valuations and specifications for construction projects has been developed.

In addition to the company’s internationalisation, the incorporation of the BS 8110-1:1997 standard also aims to respond to an increasingly frequent demand from Spanish clients, especially large engineering firms, with international projects in these areas of the world. “In recent years, our Support Department has registered an increasing number of calls from users with projects in these countries that were asking for information on how to calculate and analyse their projects with our software and the above-mentioned standard”, explains Carlos Fernández, Technical Director at CYPE.

Currently, CYPE has over thirty codes implemented in its different applications for structural analysis with concrete, including both current regulations as well as outdated standards that continue to be used to check and review structures that were designed when they were applicable, “or because they are still used in countries different to the country of origin”, clarifies Carlos Fernández.
